Akiba Sunday: Not what I thought it was.

So I started off by going to Shinjuku again to talk to the sakura house managemant, to find out what I exactly had to do for the garbage. I got a little lost on the way but that is alright since I found the/a Y.A.G(Yoyogi Anime Genkei, I am not sure about the last part though) building on my way to Yoyogi Park...while I was there I forgot to ask about the electricity. Then I headed for the Citi Bank since I now that it will accept international dept cards. Then headed back home and walked to Akihabara.

On the way there I spotted the Ueno Post office, now that I know where a post office is I can send my stuff back and it's only a short walk there maybe 5mins.

I made it to Akiba around 12:00 where I took a few pictures I didn't catch much shows around the Akiba station there where many cute maids having there photo taken and handing out fliers. I went back to that famous spot and searched for that display of "creepy dolls" I found them and took a few pics, i search every where for a sign that had "no photos"(including a camera with a line through it, didn't find one so I took pictures)

I then walked aimlessly around Akiba found lots of computer shops. was trying to find a place to pick up a few items for people back home. No luck, i guess I will have to try to find out where to get them off the net.

As I was walking down the main road there where a huge group of people gathered, that meant a show or a cosplayer. Before I could see what it was the police had disbanded the group.

I traveled on and other stuff, I was getting tired and hungry so I stopped in Beckers's coffee and ordered a burger with Ice milk. The burger was good and I thought that the ice milk was something special, turns out it is just that, milk with ice in it. Satisfied I left to find more coplayers, but there weren't that many...SO needless to say Akiba on Sundays where not as much fun as I thought they be.

I then I headed home and relaxed.

I am hoping that Harajuku on Sunday is better.

I'm sure Akihabara has its charms, but Harajuku is the place to be in Tokyo on Sundays. All the kids dress up in styles that the Paris fashion designers come to cherry-pick for next year's collections. Lots of wannabe idols and rock bands set up in Harajuku and bash out their repertoire, hoping someone with pull in the record industry will notice them... or at least a few cute girls. ;) There are great shops in Harajuku too, lots of expensive clothing shops and the only international Tin Tin shop I found in Tokyo. Then when you're tired of all the commotion, you can retreat into Yoyogi Park for a little break. You will find out all about next Sunday I am sure! :)

What sort of items are you looking for that you don't see in Akihabara? If they are anime related, I encourage you to check out Shibuya's Manga no Mori and Nakano's Sun Mall before you give up completely.

You can't tell me you traveled all that way for a burger and a glass of milk!! <:O Go here and study carefully...

... and then report back when you have completed your mission! :D

PS pt II -- I uploaded a bunch of pictures of my old neighbourhood in Nakano Shimbashi on Flickr, just to see how it worked. Check them out here if you're interested:

None of these are my personal photos (much of my Tokyo pics didn't develop properly); these were found on the net. They are cool anyway. :)

I was looking for the Haruhi coffee for Sakura and DS game for Phelkis.

I have a question for you atomicker: Are the 100 yen shops the ones with a huge red sign like this "¥en shop"?

I was looking at the rail guide in my japan book and it looks like I can take the JR Yamanote line to the Takanobaba station and then transfer on the Tozai line to get to Nakano. Some time this week I'll try to get to the Nakano Sun Mall.

I remember the Haruhi coffee was difficult for "Ask" John to find as well... he eventually stumbled across it in Akihabara after several trips, if I remember rightly. Keep your eyes peeled I guess...

There are a number of competing Hyaku-yen shops in Tokyo, but my guess would be anything with "Yen" in the name is a 100 Yen shop. Just like "Dollar" in the name usually means a dollar shop over here.

As for the DS game, if you can't find it in Akihabara then my next thought would be to check Nakano. There are a few video game shops there -- I don't remember how many exactly, video games aren't my thing. You could also check here for the Haruhi coffee, as I remember seeing the Evangelion coffee in an anime shop in Nakano.

The Tozai should get you there from Takadanobaba -- also, if you take the Yamanote to Shinjuku and then transfer there to the Marounochi subway line, it's just a few stops to Nakano. That way you can combine a side-trip to Shinjuku with your trip to Nakano... unless you think you saw enough of Shinjuku on your first day to last you a little while. ;)

You mentioned they play the Astro Boy theme song in the Baba station, right? That's because Astro was "born" in Takadanobaba in the original manga. Go trivia! :D

PS -- Joanne says the Hyaku-yen shop with the tea-towels is actually in the Shinjuku Prince Hotel now -- it used to be under the hotel, in the Subnade, but they moved it. It is now on the 8th floor of the hotel. You can still get in from the Subnade; there ought to be an escalator or and elevator that goes all the way up. Each floor should have different shops, and you never know what you may find.

Have you been to Shibuya yet? There is a gigantic Tower Records there (not sure if they changed the name when the chain went under or not), as well as Tokyu Hands, Manga no Mori, at least one 24-hour manga cafe and the biggest 100-Yen shop in Tokyo. Plus, Hachiko! I want to see a photo of you with Hachiko. ;)

your welcome sakura, I am still on the hunt for them.

atomicker: I have found those towels that Joanne wanted, I picked up one of each print they had. I'll send you an email. If Joanne wants more of them just let me know how much she wants.
